Mercer Mass Timber

Mercer Mass Timber

Mercer Mass Timber now operates the state-of-the-art cross-laminated timber (CLT) manufacturing facility formerly operated by Katerra in Spokane Valley, Wash. Mercer International, based in Vancouver, British Columbia, purchased the Katerra factory in August  2021. The company is planning a $50 million upgrade in capital projects over the next two years, according to a recent article in the Spokane Business Journal.

Mercer is a global forest products company with about 2,300 employees throughout its operations in Canada, Germany and Australia.

Mercer will be hiring employees through fall 2021 and winter 2022 before bringing the factory into production. The company needs at least 40 employees to run the facility.

Equipped with extensive automation technologies, the Mercer Mass Timber factory has one of the largest CLT presses currently in operation globally and is the largest production facility in North America.

Katerra opened the 270,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in the city’s northeast industrial area in 2019. According to the company, the facility cost $150 million to build and is the largest cross-laminated timber plant in the United States. The facility occupies 29 acres of a 52-acre industrial site with easy access to transportation corridors via rail and Interstate 90. Construction of the factory generated more than 150 jobs in the valley. Some production at the facility began in late 2019. The products manufactured  include cross-laminated timber and Glulam.

Mercer acquires plant from Katerra

Through an end-to-end construction services model, Katerra planned to supply much of its CLT to projects where it would also serve as both architect and contractor. Katerra laid off 63 employees at the Spokane Valley plant when it closed the plant in early June 2021. Learn more about the Katerra factory.

Two projects in Spokane Valley that utilized Katerra materials include Pine Valley Ranch Phase 2 and River House apartment communities. In addition, the company supplied CLT to the construction of the Catalyst Building in Spokane and a new Hospitality Center – a collaborative project between Kootenai Health, Ronald McDonald House and the Community Cancer Fund – in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
