Spokane Valley Success Story
SkyOne Aerospace: Filling a niche in the military aerospace aftermarket
SkyOne Aerospace is an FFA-certified repair, maintenance and overhaul facility that provides custom solutions for customers in the military aerospace aftermarket. The company specializes in repair and overhaul of integral oil controls for multi-engine military transport and tactical planes, specifically all Northrup Grumman E-2 Hawkeye and Lockheed P-3 Orion series aircraft models, and most Lockheed C-130 models.
Gary Lee Owens, founder and vice president of SkyOne, established the company in 2015 in Spokane Valley. It occupies about 4,900 square feet of space in an industrial building just off Montgomery Avenue in Spokane Valley, not far from historic Felts Field.
Nearly 90 percent of SkyOne Aerospace’s business comes from military agencies; other clients are commercial companies, such as those that fly air cargo into remote places or fly in for disaster relief services. SkyOne Aerospace works some with the U.S. Air Force, but most business comes from foreign military agencies. Clients are typically located in Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and several countries in Africa and South America.
Overall, SkyOne has seen significant growth in both company size and business services, or capabilities, since it launched five years ago. Recently, the company added repair and overhaul capabilities for C-130 composite blade propellers and C-130 and P-3 aluminum blade propellers. Composite propellers are made of fiberglass and can be more durable long term, Owens says.
Largely due to the presence of Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane, Owens says the Inland Northwest is an excellent place for employers to find qualified personnel with military aerospace experience. Thee company currently employs about 20 workers.
