[ARCHIVED] Spokane Valley Successful in Securing Road Preservation Grant Funds

News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: February 8, 2024

Spokane Valley, WA – The City of Spokane Valley has been awarded over $5.3 million in two National Highway Performance Program (NHPP) federal grants. The two grants include nearly $4 million for the South Sullivan Road Preservation Project and $1.4 million for the Sprague Avenue Preservation Project.

The South Sullivan Road Preservation Project will receive $3.96 million of NHPP grant funding, 89% of the total estimated project cost of $4.46 million. The project limits are between East 8th Avenue and East 24th Avenue, and it is scheduled for construction in 2025. The project will replace failing asphalt, expand the city’s traffic signal communication network, provide additional sidewalks, improve portions of the existing stormwater treatment system, and evaluate the inclusion of pedestrian crossing improvements near East 12th Avenue.

The NHPP grant award for the Sprague Avenue Preservation Project is $1.35 million. This funding, paired with an additional $1.5 million federal grant the City secured through the Spokane Regional Transportation Council Surface Transportation Block Grant program, will fund $2.85 million or over 92% of the estimated $3 million total project cost. The Sprague Avenue Preservation Project, between Bowdish Road and McDonald Road, is scheduled for construction in 2025. The project will replace six travel lanes of failing asphalt, upgrade sidewalks to meet accessibility requirements, and seek to maintain the existing asphalt in the center turn lane.

The City of Spokane Valley aggressively seeks grant funding opportunities that, when paired with the city budget, allow the City to complete projects that support the safe and efficient movement of people and goods throughout the community.
